How Image Compression Works
This tool re-encodes your images at a chosen quality level using your browser's Canvas API. For JPG and WebP, reducing quality removes fine detail that's largely imperceptible while dramatically shrinking the file. For PNG the canvas encodes as lossless PNG — actual savings depend on the image content. SVG files are returned as-is since they're already text-based XML.
Everything runs locally in your browser. Your images are never sent to any server — making this safe for confidential photos.
Quality Guide
- 85–100% — print quality; near-lossless for photos
- 70–84% — best for web images; typically 40–60% smaller with invisible difference
- 50–69% — good for thumbnails and email attachments
- Under 50% — noticeable quality loss; use for very small previews only
Pro Tip: Convert PNG Photos to JPG
Photos saved as PNG are nearly always much larger than they need to be. Switch the output format to JPG and compress at 80% to typically reduce a 2 MB PNG photo to under 300 KB with no visible difference.
