Electronic Signatures on PDFs โ€” Legal, Safe & Free

Electronic signatures (eSignatures) have the same legal standing as handwritten signatures under the ESIGN Act (USA), eIDAS Regulation (EU), and equivalent legislation in most countries worldwide. An eSignature is defined as any electronic process that indicates acceptance of an agreement โ€” which includes drawn, typed, and image-based signatures applied through tools like this one.

Our eSign PDF tool gives you three ways to create your signature. Draw lets you sign with your mouse or touchscreen, creating a natural handwritten appearance. Type converts your name into a signature-style font โ€” choose from several calligraphic typefaces for a professional look. Upload lets you use an existing scanned signature or a PNG image of your written signature.

Beyond the signature itself, the tool lets you add common supporting fields that most signed documents require: initials (for pages that need to be initialed separately), full name, today's date (auto-filled), company name, and job title. Each element is draggable and resizable so you can position it precisely on the signature line or in the required field.

Tips for Professional Electronic Signatures

  • Use a consistent signature โ€” Your electronic signature should resemble your physical signature. For typed signatures, use the same name as on your ID.
  • Add the date โ€” Always include the signing date next to your signature. Most legal documents require both.
  • Initial each page โ€” For multi-page contracts, use the Initials field on every page to indicate you've reviewed the entire document.
  • PNG transparency โ€” When uploading a scanned signature, use a PNG with a transparent background so it overlays the PDF cleanly without a white box.
  • Keep a copy โ€” Download and securely store every signed document for your records.
