โ OG Tag Checklist
What Are Open Graph Tags?
Open Graph (OG) tags are meta tags in your page's <head> that control how your content appears when shared on social media platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, and WhatsApp. Without them, platforms make their best guess at a title, image, and description โ often with poor results.
The four essential OG tags are og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url. Getting these right significantly improves click-through rates on social shares, which indirectly benefits your SEO through increased traffic signals.
Image Requirements by Platform
Facebook and LinkedIn both prefer a 1200ร630 pixel image (1.91:1 ratio). Images smaller than 600px wide may not display as large cards. Always use absolute URLs for og:image โ relative paths won't work. HTTPS is required by most platforms.
og:type and When to Use It
Use website for your homepage and most pages. Use article for blog posts and news articles โ it unlocks additional article properties like article:author and article:published_time which enable richer previews. Use product for e-commerce pages where supported.
