How to Write YouTube Descriptions That Rank

YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world. Your description is one of the primary signals YouTube uses to understand, categorize, and rank your video. A well-optimized description doesn't just help with SEO โ€” it also converts viewers who land on your video page but haven't clicked play yet.

The 3-Part Description Structure

  • Above the fold (first 150 chars) โ€” This is visible without clicking "Show more". Lead with your most important keyword and a compelling hook. This is prime SEO real estate.
  • Body (150โ€“800 chars) โ€” Expand on what the video covers. Include related keywords naturally. Add your CTA (subscribe, link, comment).
  • Footer (800+ chars) โ€” Timestamps, social links, gear list, related videos, legal/affiliate disclosures. This section helps YouTube understand your channel's context.

Keyword Placement Rules

  • Your primary keyword should appear in the first sentence
  • Use 2โ€“3 keyword variations naturally throughout โ€” not keyword stuffing
  • Optimal keyword density is 1โ€“3% โ€” appearing every 50โ€“100 words
  • Include long-tail variations: if your keyword is "productivity", also include "productivity tips for beginners", "daily productivity routine"
